We are always sharing information. Sometime this is ‘written on our face’, other times we are choosing to share information via social media. Two talks will discuss cutting edge psychological theories and research relating to what information we share and with whom.

Where are you looking? A child’s understanding of eye gaze

Catherine Sayer (Postgraduate Researcher at University of East Anglia)
As the common phrase goes, “the eyes are a window to the soul”. They convey large amounts of information about other’s attention, thoughts, and behaviours. Even newborn babies look at eyes, but our ability to use the information from them undergoes a long development. This talk will follow children’s developing understanding of eye gaze, with discussion of its importance for social abilities.

Filtered life: I’ll tell you what I tell you: Choosing what information to send

Dr Neil Garrett (Post Doctoral Fellow at University of East Anglia)
Information has the power to change how we act in the world. But increasingly we face a choice whether or not to share the information we receive and potentially change the decisions of others. This talk will explore how an information’s reliability, surprise and valence (whether the information is better or worse than we thought) influence our decision to share it. We will also discuss how brain circuits involved in emotional processing play a role in our willingness to share misleading information over time.
