Scarecrows, gremlins and RAF bomber command

Dr Dan Ellin (International Bomber Command Centre Archivist & Lecturer)
It is usually accepted that Bomber Command's role in the war was downplayed and veterans were neglected. As a consequence, veterans' testimonies often focus on the dangers, the 'chop rate' (the high attrition on operations), and some of their coping mechanisms, their comradery, superstitions, and rituals. Using interviews and documents from the International Bomber Command Centre Digital Archive, my research considers how the concepts of Scarecrows and Gremlins are used as part of the cultural remembrance of RAF Bomber Command.
